The Workboat Mate (500/1600 Tons) Program

PMI Welcomes our in-coming Mate Program Students !!!!!!

Next Program commences January, 2008.

Introduction

This two-year program is specifically designed for the entry-level person interested in becoming an officer. Comprised of 32 weeks of classroom / simulation training and a minimum of 52 weeks onboard training which will be documented in a ‘Training Record Book’.

Sea time training is completed in conjunction with contracts PMI has drawn up with reputable maritime companies in the area. While training on the vessel, the candidate is paid a stipend, which will vary with the company used.

Once a trainee has completed this program and tested with the USCG they will receive the following endorsements:

  • Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch
  • Able Seaman Limited
  • Mate 500 GRT Oceans or Mate 1600 GRT Near Coastal
  • STCW95 Certificate OICNW on Vessels 200 GRT (500 GT) or more
  • One Year of Sea Service Credit for Following an Approved Program of Training.

Sequence of Program

Comprised of five (5) phases of academic and simulation courses at PMI, and four (4) phases of sea time, the program is outlined below. The sequence is not variable.

Cost of Program

The total cost for this 2-year program is $28,000. Our payment plan consists of eight (8) payments in the amount of $3,500 each; the first is due 30 days before the first day of the program, the other seven payments are due on the 1st of the month to begin three months from the start date, and every three months there after. Due dates of these payments will be noted on the Enrollment Agreement when a candidate enrolls. See our section on Financial Information for loan programs and assistance.

Affiliations

We offer, within our programs, courses through our affiliation with Fremont Maritime Services, (www.sea-safety.com/), and Compass Courses (http://www.compasscourses.com/). Both of these schools are highly respected within the industry and are USCG approved. 

Admission Requirements

No person can be admitted into our program without all of the admission requirements, below, in hand at the school.  Confirmation of enrollment is on a first-come-first-serve basis based on admissions requirements being met and handed in to our Registrar.  At that time a candidate will be enrolled and confirmed for a spot. 

  • Interview with the Director of the school for acceptance into the program
  • Must be 19 years old
  • High School Diploma or Recognized Equivalency or ASSET Placement Test (see link below for assistance on ASSET tests)    http://www.seattlecentral.org/learn/math/placementprep.html
  • Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) REMINDER: It is vital to get this process underway at least three months before the start of the program. 
  • Merchant Mariner's and the Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Signed Enrollment Agreement
  • Complete Registration Form
  • Signed Payment Schedule
  • Signed Consent Form
  • Payment or Proof of Payment
  • Interview with Potential Company Providing Sea Time Billets

*Regardless of whether or not an applicant is applying for a Student Loan, he or she is required to sign a Payment Schedule.

Note: The Mate 500/1600 Tons candidate must also meet all physical, security, character, and oath requirements outlined by the United States Coast Guard for Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) as defined in 46CFR and Policy Letter 01-02.
