Course Description

This 8 hour course is designed to address the growing need for mentor and assessors in the maritime industry as a result of apprenticeship style onboard training programs.

This is a two part course; the first part is to provide "Mentors" with the practical knowledge and techniques to assist and enhance their ability to mentor.

The second part of this course is to provide participants with basic knowledge and understanding of formal practical assessments and techniques to assist and enhance their ability to assess objectively, efficiently, and consistently every time.

Course Subjects / Learning Objectives

  • Understand what a Mentor is
  • Describe the difference between a trainer, coach, mentor and assessor
  • Recognize limits on mentoring
  • Describe how adults learn and techniques for effective instruction
  • Describe and demonstrate mentoring techniques
  • Clearly define the role of  "Assessor"
  • Define Assessment, Validity, Reliability, Performance Condition, Performance Standard
  • Explain the assessment process
  • Outline procedures for each step of the assessment process
  • Outline the contents of a briefing session prior to assessment
  • Demonstrate observing the candidates performance
  • Demonstrate recording results and determining assessment outcome
  • Demonstrate debriefing a candidate
