Standards of Training

We appreciate your patronage and look forward to responding to your career needs. Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) is a non-profit continuing education center for professional mariners. Our school is licensed under Chapter 28.C10 RCW as a Washington State Vocational Training Provider. This means that law requires us to follow the policies mandated by the Workforce Training, Education and Coordinating Board’s State approving agency. Be aware, some organizations offering “Captain’s” courses are not licensed as private vocational schools and therefore are not covered by the state of Washington’s Tuition Recovery Fund. This fund protects the consumer by guaranteeing tuition reimbursement should the school close or fail to meet its obligations. Washington’s Eligible Training Provider’s List can be viewed at Washington State’s Training Education and Coordinating Board’s website at www.wtb.gov

The Veteran's Affairs has approved our school for G.I. Bill funding for our vocational programs. Please call to inquire further.

We are approved by SLM Financial, a Sallie Mae company for student loan funding. You may contact SLM at www.slmfinancial.com. For more information click over to Financial Services.

We are dedicated to offering superior standards of training and the standards set by State and Federal Regulations through the above agencies we are affiliated with show our commitment to this goal. Per these requirements each individual student must fill out, sign and date a Registration Form and an Enrollment Agreement, which the school must also sign and date.

It is the responsibility and goal of the Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) to provide our students with detailed and specific information regarding the school. If you have any questions regarding our policies after having read our Enrollment Agreement, please do not hesitate to call. Our Enrollment Agreement follows requirements set by the WTECB.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a vocational interest in the maritime industry and have the ability to benefit from instruction. A signed Enrollment Agreement is required at the time of registration. Individual programs have additional entrance requirements related to licensure or may require specific educational credentials. Admission to the Institute can be initiated by telephone, mail, email, fax, or agency referral.

Requirements for admission to each of our separate vocational programs are listed below.  Please call to confirm availability in one of our Programs and receive a registration packet.

Confirmation of enrollment in a program is not complete until all admissions requirements have been met and all required paperwork has been received by the Registrar.  It is the student's responsibility to ensure this paperwork has been received.

It is the student’s responsibility to read the provided information given them by the school so that they may know their rights and responsibilities before registering and attending the school.  See Standards of Training above.

Admissions Requirements for each program are included within the individual program page.  For shortcuts, click the program you are interested in, below:

Satisfactory Progress

Satisfactory progress within a training program is indicated by successful completion of courses that make up the program. Students are entitled to retake courses that they initially fail. If a student fails to pass a course after a second attempt, the Training Director will meet with the student and review options for continuing in the program. This review will take into account the student's performance in other courses, the time remaining to complete the program and any supplementary education or training that the student may need to complete the program successfully.

Study Guides/Skills Assessments

If your registration confirmation includes a study guide for one of our courses, please be sure to follow the instructions on these documents. Please also view the course description on our website as there will be information provided for each course, if needed.

Identification

All students will need to provide photo identification to establish identity per USCG Policy Letter 11-02. This is to help PMI ensure validity in the award of certificates and preclude the chance of an imposter taking a course for someone else. Acceptable forms of identification are:

  • U.S. Coast Guard issued Merchant Mariner Document (MMD)
  • U.S. Coast Guard issued STCW-95 certificate (with photograph)
  • U.S. Passport (current or expired)
  • Driver's license or identification card issued by a state or U.S. possession provided it contains a photograph
  • Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt with photograph (INS Form I-151 or I-551)

A copy of the identification presented will be made and retained on file.

Administrative & Vocational Status

During the first 15-minutes of the course you will be asked to fill out various administrative forms that are required by the WTECB (see Standards of Training). We are also affiliated with Renton Technical College (RTC) and generate funds through a grant provided by RTC.  To support this funding we ask our students to fill out a separate RTC registration form for each eligible course.

Unscheduled Closings

Students are encouraged to contact the school during severe weather conditions or other emergency situations to ensure courses are still running as scheduled.

Holidays

PMI will hold classes on most holidays except for Christmas, New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July, unless otherwise notified.

Course Completion

Once your course is complete and you have passed your final exam, you will be awarded a Certificate.  The school does not keep copies of certificates on file.  If you need a replacement, a $15 administrative fee will apply.

Privacy Policy

We make every effort to ensure that student records remain private and secure.  We do not release student records unless where noted on the 'sign - in form' for Pass / Fail status and for certificate numbers.
